Design Objects - Lamp Fortuny Moda (1903)

With this project, Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo created to experiment with the recently invented electric bulb. At the perfect time and place, new technology, science, and materials are sometimes happen to meet and successfully marry with an exciting and unusual idea of a designer, giving birth to new ingenious objects. It is how was created the Fortuny Moda floor lamp. The artist intuitively was exploring how to use indirect lighting to transform a scene and create new dimensions of light and shadow, increasing visual interest. Succeeding to reflect by using the inner side of the fabric, he could produce any atmosphere. 

Fortuny y Madrazo patented this lighting system in 1901 and perfectioned it latter in 1903 under the name of Fortuny Moda. The inspiration for the base most probably came from a tripod for a camera, with an adjustable central foot and a rotatable head. The lampshade is foldable, and its aesthetic recalls the lampshades of the Epoque. 

The genius invention consisted of mixing all these elements into one innovative product, up to date, and entirely in trend to any spaces. From a conceptual point of view, this item was ahead of the time, and even today, it has a significant impact on its unique personality, establishing itself as an iconic design piece. 

Since 1985, the rights to produce this item were acquired by Pallucco Italia, which up until today provides this lamp in the traditional Total White or Total Black look, offering also a series of other modern interpretations, some of which are using the famous Rubelli fabrics. A dimmer can be added to adjust the intensity.
